Tour Hospital | Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
The MRI is a 1 Tesla superconducting Siemens magnet. MRI is considered the “gold standard” for imaging the nervous system. In addition to providing fast, detailed images, the MRI is a safe and reliable method to visualize tissues that otherwise cannot be seen. It is primarily used to examine the brain and spinal cord. However, it also allows us to see areas of the body that previously were not visible in such great detail. These areas include the knee, shoulder, heart, abdomen and elbow. The average study of the brain or spine takes about 30 minutes. During the procedure, it is essential that the patient remain completely still. For this reason, patients are anesthetized and closely monitored via heart rate and oxygen saturation of the blood. The images that are generated by the MRI are viewed on a computer workstation and can be sent to any location in the hospital, including the hand held slate style computers that the doctors use to show clients the images of their pet.
